A Linguistic Information Behaviour Model for WWW(World Wide Web)

ABSTRACT

WWW(World Wide Web) 환경에서의 정보활동(information behavior) 모델은 정보검색 시스템과 같은 사용자 인터페이스(user interface) 설계에 있어 중요한 이론적 근거이다. 종래에는 사용자 행동의 일반화를 통해 정보활동 모델을 도출하였다. 그러나 이러한 연구방법은 사용자 행동의 심층부에 위치한 정보활동의 근본적 원인을 규명하는데 한계를 가진다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해, WWW 환경에서 다루어지는 정보의 의미를 새롭게 정의하고 이를 바탕으로 정보활동의 근본적 원인을 밝힐 수 있는 추상적 모델을 제시할 필요가 있다. 정보를 패턴화된 신호의 집합으로 정의하는 것은 사이버네틱스(Cybernetics)와 정보이론 분야의 공통된 주장이다. 한편, WWW 환경은 문서와 연결고리, 즉 노드(node)와 링크(link)의 단순 구조를 바탕으로 구성되는데 이는 구조적으로 인간의 언어활동과 많은 유사점을 가진다. 따라서 WWW에서의 정보활동은 패턴화된 웹문서의 집합을 언어적 규칙에 따라 구조화하는 것이다. 소쉬르(Ferdinand de Saussure)의 구조주의 언어학에 기반을 둔 정보활동 모델은 통합체와 계열체의 원리에 따라 문서집합을 구조화한다. 이는 추상화된 정보의 특징과 정보활동의 구조적 원칙을 명료화하여 정보검색 시스템과 사용자 인터페이스 설계를 위한 새로운 접근 방법을 제시할 수 있다.

In the World Wide Web environment, the information behavior model functions as a theoretical basis for constructing the information behavior tools. The traditional information behavior model is deduced from the generalization of the user behavior. However, this method has not enough strength to expose the essential cause which lies deeply inside the ordinary information behavior. To address this problem, it is necessary to redefine the meaning of information in the WWW environment. And through the result of this redefinition, it is possible to figure out the abstract model which can be regarded as the fundamental cause of information behavior. The information as an object of the information behavior is the set of the patterned signals. This proposition is discovered concurrently in cybernetics and information theory. Also, the WWW environment is consist of the documents and the linkages, in other words, of the simplified structure of the nodes and the edges. This structure has many similarities with the human linguistic behavior. Through these basses, it is assertible that the information behavior in the WWW environment is the structuring documents, the set of pasteurized signals, in linguistic method. In the information behavior model of which the theoretical basis is derived from the Saussurian structural linguistics, the sets of documents are structured in the principle of syntagm and paradigm. The linguistic information behavior model grounded on the conceptualized characteristic of the information and the rule for the structuring the information behavior. Thus, the linguistic information behavior model can provide the fundamental methodology for the user interface architecture and the information retrieval system.
