The relational model of data as a cultural object and its application to the new media art
ABSTRACT
With the invention of the relational model of database, the information technology enters upon a new phase. The guarantee for the totality of interior structure and the implementation of query-based search that based on Cartesian product are the most remarkable and fruitful accomplishments. However, the basis of these achievements, there are the linearity of relational model of database as a medium. The Deleuzian concept of rhizome and the Flusserian discussion on the archive are the starting point of linearity as a characteristic of medium. As a result, the relational model of database can be regarded as cultural object that is the reflection of then non-linearity. The purpose of this paper is to study on the reflections of the significance and the peculiarity of the linearity in the database-oriented new media art so that we are able to observe the hidden aspect of the relational model of database.
